Chef Victor Arguinzoniz
# 10 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants of 2016
Visited: October 13th, 2016 – Lunch Service
There is so much to be said about the art and finesse of grilling with live fire. At restaurant Asador Etxebarri, accuracy and restraint were the two words that best described Chef Victor Arguinzoniz level of mastery with grilling. No wonder his restaurant has been on The World’s 50 Best Restaurant List numerous times. His food exuded simplicity, yet you taste the essence and purity of every ingredient. The entire tasting menu has been kissed by the smoke and fire, even the desserts have a component of smoke to it. As you walk towards the restaurant, you will immediately experience the tantalizing smell of the wood burning. We knew right from the start that we were in for a delicious treat!
Asador Etxebarri is located in the Atxondo Valley of the Spanish Basque country, in a quaint town of Axpe. It takes effort to get here. My two main advices are, go for the lunch service, and don’t drive. This way, you get to enjoy the scenic countryside during the two hour train ride from San Sebastián, and you can drink a lot of wine! As I was planning my trip to San Sebastián, it was determined that neither my husband nor I, would like to undertake the arduous task of driving after our big “Tasting Menus” especially when wanted to do wine pairings. Thanks to Google, I was able to research and figure out how to use public transportation to travel and eat at Asador Extebarri. More details on how to get here at the end of this blog.
