Elegance and sophistication are the words that best described my experience at Astrid y Gastón. Out of all the restaurants we dined in Lima, this was my husband’s favourite, while mine was Maido. This proves that tastes and preferences are subjective, even in couples who have been together for almost 12 years.
Chef Gastón Acurio, a prominent Peruvian chef, placed Peruvian Cuisine in the world map. He proudly focuses on the biodiversity of Peruvian ingredients alongside with head Chef Diego Muñoz. Chef Muñoz’ resume includes working at notable restaurants such as elBulli and Mugaritz.
Chef Munóz, along with Chef Acurio, create magic at their beautiful restaurant housed inside a historical and palatial house of Casa Moreyra, in the beautiful San Isidro neighbourhood of Lima. We used Uber to get here from our hotel in Miraflores.
The husband and I thought that this was the best “Cebiche” (spelled with a “b” in Perú) that we ever tasted in all of the restaurants that we dined in Perú. Not only visually striking, but also it has the perfect balance of flavours, and acidity. The creaminess from the sea urchin was phenomenal. I am probably being bias, since I am a sucker for edible florals.
I was in love with this restaurant. The setting could not be more perfect being inside an old (but restored) “hacienda” of Casa Moreyra that has historical significance in the beautiful San Isidro district of Lima. The service was beautiful and attentive. The dishes, between the husband and I, arrived in perfect unison, like a beautiful “pas de deux” danced by the staff. The dishes were plated tastefully and our host was able to present the dishes and ingredients as it arrived.
They showcased a lot of beautiful Peruvian seafood ingredients, perfect for a seafood lover like me. Astrid y Gastón definitely was a culinary experience we will never forget.
