The Diner’s Club 50 Best Restaurants Discovery Series of 2017 – USA and Mid Canada
Visited: May 13th, 2017 – Dinner Service
I frequently visit my hometown, Vancouver in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. So, whenever I am in town visiting my family and friends, checking out the restaurant scene comes naturally.
When The World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced that Bauhaus Restaurant was included in The Diner’s Club Discovery Series, I knew immediately that I had to eat here. It is a restaurant that specializes in modern German cuisine. The restaurant is located in Gastown, a historical and trendy neighbourhood in the heart of Vancouver.
Inside the Restaurant
The beautiful restaurant was an art instillation in itself. The space exuded gorgeous clean lines, modern cement walls, linear lighting, and Berlin-esque graffiti in the bathroom. The restaurant’s design pays homage to the famous German Art School, Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, hence the name. It was a school in the 1930’s that taught the combination of fine arts with architecture, sculpture and painting, the very same elements that you find with every plate.
The Tasting Menu
The restaurant offers both à la carte and tasting menus that are driven by the current season. Naturally, we opted for the latter along with wine pairings. Joining my husband and I for dinner were my brother, C.J. and his sweetie, Sheila. There’s nothing more I love than sharing my passion for eating at notable restaurants with family members.
A Delicious Surprise from the Chefs
During the meal, I was telling my dinner companions about how much I love spring because of the abundance of asparagus, and how I used purple, white and green asparagus in my recent roasted Branzino recipe. To our surprise and absolute delight, the chefs sent a gift of a surprise dish that was not included on the tasting menu to our table.
Our friendly host said, “Since you guys were talking about asparagus, here is a gift from the kitchen, an asparagus dish!”
It was a remarkably sweet and kind gesture.
We were highly impressed by our overall experience at Bauhaus. The food was not only visually stunning, but also the well-balanced flavours reflected the freshness of the season. The components in every plate had a purpose to the overall taste of the dish. For example, the different preparations of tomato in the Spot Prawn dish – the tomato water, tomato confit and tomato sorbet – highlighted the different aspects of the tomato’s sweet, tangy and bright flavours which harmonized impeccably with the delicateness of the spot prawn.
The service was notably friendly and outstanding. We felt welcomed and taken care of from the moment we walked into the restaurant. Our host, was not only very attentive to our needs, but was also very knowledgeable with components of every dish and explained the wine pairings very well each courses. During the tasting menu, the chefs surprised us with a gift, an off-menu course of White Asparagus Soup simply because they overheard our table’s conversation about asparagus. It was a very kind and gracious gesture that made this experience even more memorable.
Multiple times during our meal, the owner of the restaurant, Uwe Boll, stopped by our table to see how we were doing. It was definitely nice to see the restaurant’s proprietor who is very active in daily restaurant operations. He even explained how they thought of pairing the strawberry-rhubarb dessert with a red vermouth, a pairing that blew the minds of my fellow dinner mates.
Bauhaus Restaurant undoubtedly deserved to be a part of The Diner’s Club 50 Best Discovery Series. I am very excited to see what the future holds for this restaurant. I know that more great things and successes are still to come.
