When the husband told me that he wanted to visit Washington DC to see the capital of this country, to bask in all the glorious monuments and to see where laws are made, I responded with, “As long as we can have dinner at Minibar by Chef José Andrés.” Priorities aside, this restaurant proved to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable tasting menus we had.
Chef José Andrés, a world renowned Spanish chef brought the Spanish molecular gastronomy to USA. He trained underneath the father of molecular gastronomy, Chef Ferran Adrià in probably what a lot of people consider the best restaurants of all time, elBulli in Catalonia, Spain. I personally enjoy molecular gastronomy and the utilization of Science to manipulate food and blow the mind.
The restaurant is comprised of 2 bars, each bar is able to sit 6 people. For dinner service, there are only 4 time slots available, hence a total of only 24 people are able to dine in this restaurant on any night.
Welcome drink of Krug Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne, France. This was paired with “Pressed Flowers”, let me tell you champagne and flowers were a phenomenal pairing.
Mignardises and digestifs.
Service was spectacular. Since we sat on the “chef’s bar” we got to witness first-hand the magic in the kitchen as we watched the chefs cook and plated each course. Seeing the chefs in action was definitely one of the many highlights of this whole experience. The chefs were friendly, informative, and showed us a multitude of their techniques in how they achieved shapes, textures, consistencies and flavours.
I would like to point out that this was the first restaurant that noticed my “left-handedness”, as they placed all my wine glasses for the pairings on my left-side. I was so amazed that I thanked the Sommelier for noticing, and he replied that he saw how I held my champagne glass at the beginning of the meal. Their attention to detail was not only evident in their food, but also in their service. I cannot wait to come back, hopefully soon!
